A highly original car carrying handsome and well-proportioned Barker Sports Limousine coachwork, having had one owner for the last 51 years. The lines of 3-CM-195 are elegant with a sporting edge and an attractive flowing line to the rear. Finished in brown over cream, the car has ‘easy clean’ ace wheel discs fitted. The interior trim is lovely and in excellent original condition, being highly detailed. The car is relatively close coupled and has a division. Novel folding footrests are included in the rear compartment. The boot lid doubles as a luggage rack, a sophisticated feature and typical of the time.
Within the car’s history file is a copy of a logbook issued in 1959. This quotes ownership at the time to Major Edward Collins of Burneston Hall, Bedale. In 1962 the car was owned by William V. Ogley of Ham Mill, Newbury, before changing to Arthur Meredith-Owens of Kings Sutton Manor, Banbury. In 1969 3-CM-195 was purchased by Geoffery Hubert Cookson of 100 Nanaimo Way, Kingswinford and then by Jens Pilo in 1973, who bought the car from Rolls-Royce & Bentley agents, David Scott-Moncrieff & Sons Ltd. The car was advertised as being the finest, but ‘not the most expensive Phantom III on the market today’ and is quoted as ‘having been carefully stored for a long time’.
Mileage noted at the time of purchase (and confirmed by subsequent MOTs) confirm the car had only covered 12,000 miles. Being a fastidious custodian, Jens regularly ran the car (supported by a maintenance log) ensuring it remained in good running order.
In 1986 the engine was overhauled by David Mead. Following this P&A Wood carried out further improvements in 1987-89. General maintenance followed by by Arthur Archer of Great Dunmow. In 2007 the car participated in the 50-year celebrations of the RREC.
Acquired by the current owner in 2023, the car has undergone significant mechanical repairs to the radiator and all engine ancillaries. The clutch has been rebuilt and a new exhaust system fitted. The chassis has been fully serviced and the car drives superbly.
In summary, this is a highly original Phantom III, in exceptionally good mechanical condition. It has been in long term ownership and carries attractive Barker Sports Limousine coachwork.
